Highpower rifle December 2009
Posted by: | Comments There were 10 High Power competitors shooting the November 15, Fun Match at the CTSA Range. This match was a standard 50 round National Match course of fire. The winds were gusty winds and there was no mirage due to the overcast day. This made for some tough wind calls. Winner of the match was Jon Ussery with a 475-5X. Shawn Taylor was second with a 470-7X, and Wayne Nunn was third with a 469-9X.
The next match is the Pearl Harbor Remembrance M1 Garand Match at CTSA Range on Sunday, December 6. We’ll start the day shooting a standard 35 round J.C. Garand Match. We have “loaner” Garands available for competitors to use. (Springfields, Enfields, and Carbines are legal too.) Match fee is $25 for adults and $15 for juniors, and includes 35 rounds of M2 Ball 30-06 in the entry fee.
The fun will continue with our annual M-1 Carbine Rattle-Battle Match. The course of fire will start at 200 yards prone, then at 150 yards sitting, and finally 100 yards standing, with a time limit of 50 seconds at each range. A total of 50 total rounds of ammo may be fired. Match fee will be $5.00. For ammunition you have two options, bring-your-own-bullets (BYOB) or purchase (very limited) carbine ammo (50 rounds) for sale at $15.00 per box. The organization has loaner carbines available for use at the match. The lovely and rare Ken Slade M-1 Carbine Rattle-Battle trophy will be awarded to the match winner.
Finally, if we have enough interested shooters, we’ll conduct our Bayonet Challenge Match which consists of 5 rounds in 5 minutes, standing slow fire, using any service rifle (any country) with a bayonet mounted. Highest score on the 200 yard SR target wins a turkey! All this shooting fun begins at 0800 for set up and first rounds down range at 0900.
SMALLBORE December 2009
Posted by: | CommentsOur November match was lightly attended with only four prone shooters and six 3P folks. The high score amongst those on their bellies was Wayne Nunn with 589-31X followed by Leonard Trevino with 589-30X. Hmm…only one X between the two. That’s close! Congratulations, Wayne.
Of the young folks who are able to get into the standing and kneeling positions, Katie Bridges posted the high score of 913-23X with Garrett Rabal next in line with 882-11X and Garrett Stearns with 879-16X. Our next match will most likely be scrubbed because the range will be in use for law enforcement training, however it is not certain. Wayne will email the usual shooters with an up-date well before the match.
ADIOS FROM EL PRESIDENTE
Posted by: | CommentsI have had the privilege of serving as your president for the past two years. It has been interesting and fulfilling to see the South Texas Marksmanship Training Center emerge as a viable 501.c.3 corporation with high ideals and goals. We have assisted beginning shooters win medals in national level competitions and have started a scholarship fund for some gifted youngster in the future. We have built our Blackhawk range up from a derelict trashy field into a fine little shooting range. Shawn Taylor is the new president and Dan Harper is the new VP. Let’s give them our full support and encouragement. Thank you for letting me be your president.
HIGH POWER RIFLE August 2008
Posted by: | CommentsWe had nine High Power competitors in attendance at the July 20 “Fun Match” at the CTSA Range. The shooters enjoyed that “dry heat” that San Antonio is so famous for (yeah Right!), and a pesky southeast breeze did start blowing right on schedule, making the off-hand stage a bit more challenging. Winner of the match was Jon Ussery with 471-7x. Second was Wayne Nunn with 460-9X followed by Dan Harper with 449-9X. Off the bench, Jim Ford had a 459-10X and the High Junior was Jason Laa with a 403-5X. Our next match will be a Fun Match at CTSA on Sunday, August 17. It will be a standard 50 round National Match course of fire. Entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for juniors. Fun begins at 8:00 for set up and first rounds down range at 9:00, remember it’s gonna get hot!
